ALBUM OVERVIEW

Duets with Dad is more than an album—it’s a heartfelt testimony to the bond between father and son, crafted through the language of soul. Brian Owens and his father, Thomas Owens, join forces on this deeply personal and musically rich project that weaves together the sacred threads of family, faith, and heritage. Rooted in the tradition of American soul while embracing folk, gospel, and pop influences, the album brings together legendary collaborators including Michael McDonald, David Sanborn, Isaiah Sharkey, Dylan McDonald, and The High Rhythm Section. Recorded in St. Louis, the project is a vibrant tribute to the city’s rich musical heritage—one that spans generations and styles.

“I'm always excited to work with my dad, Dylan and Mike, but I’ve never had the chance to get everyone on a project together,” said Brian Owens. “The opportunity to get the four of us on this song—which so beautifully encapsulates the prayer of a parent for his child—was a blessing beyond measure. What's more, to record it in St. Louis with some of the best cats in the country was icing on the cake. It was a special moment for all of us that we won't soon forget.”
“I’ve always enjoyed the diverse musical culture of North County St. Louis, and have always been proud to say I’m from there,” said Michael McDonald. “To get the chance to participate on this recording with Brian Owens, his dad Thomas, my son Dylan and the wonderful players and production team from St. Louis—north and south—is like a journey across generations of the area’s music spanning the last half century. Some amazingly bright and talented musicians and vocalists continue the artistic traditions of that place that, for me, still feels like home.”
“It’s always a blast working with Brian and his camp,” said Dylan McDonald. “Tracking this tune with Brian, Thomas, my dad, and everyone else involved has been one of the many pleasures of my life.”
